In Conversation with a Tradition

The publication is honored to be associated with two scholars whose work has significantly shaped contemporary philosophical hermeneutics.

Hong Handing

洪汉鼎
Honorary Editor

Hong Handing is a prominent Chinese scholar of philosophical hermeneutics. His scholarship has contributed substantially to the introduction, interpretation, and development of hermeneutic philosophy in China, especially through sustained engagement with Hans-Georg Gadamer and the wider tradition of Western hermeneutics. His work has helped foster reflection on the philosophical foundations of understanding and the significance of hermeneutics for contemporary Chinese thought.

Jean Grondin

Philosopher · Université de Montréal
Honorary Editor

Jean Grondin is an internationally recognized philosopher whose work focuses on philosophical hermeneutics, German philosophy, and metaphysics. His influential studies of Hans-Georg Gadamer and the history of hermeneutics have made a major contribution to international scholarship. His research explores the foundations of understanding, the scope of hermeneutic experience, and the relationship between hermeneutics and metaphysics.

Understanding as Philosophical Encounter

Hermeneutics is approached not merely as a method for interpreting texts, but as a fundamental dimension of human existence and philosophical inquiry.

Hermeneutical Reviews is an annual academic publication devoted to philosophical interpretation, the history of ideas, and sustained intellectual dialogue. It welcomes historically informed and critically engaged readings of philosophical texts, with attention to the development of concepts, the interconnections between philosophical problems, and the continuing significance of classical thought.

The publication seeks to bring classical works into dialogue with contemporary questions. Rather than treating interpretation as the passive reception of inherited ideas or their arbitrary appropriation, it understands interpretation as an active encounter among texts, interpreters, and traditions—an encounter in which horizons are questioned, transformed, and brought into a productive relationship.

Articles & Review Essays

Two complementary formats for original research and sustained critical engagement.

01 / RESEARCH

Articles

Original contributions to the history of philosophy and philosophical hermeneutics, including new interpretations of classical texts, conceptual genealogies, and historically informed analyses of major philosophical problems.

02 / CRITICAL DIALOGUE

Review Essays

Substantial critical engagements with significant works published within the previous three years. Essays should do more than summarize a book: they should situate it within a field, identify its central questions, and open a wider dialogue about its arguments and implications.
